Room 127, Where Art Happens.I'm Deb Hall and I teach art at Harper Creek High School. I love teaching art!! I get very excited about the work that my students produce. I'm not sure if there is anything better than a student getting excited about what they've made.

11/1/2016 0 Comments Art 1 Scratch boardsMore work on value but with a little twist. This time we worked on scratch boards making the challenge a little bigger. Having to think about scratching away the light area and leaving the shadow creates a little stress for students used to drawing in the shadow. Everything turned out great though, and the students were really happy with their results. As you can see they did a great job. paper mache' masks and sculpturesWell my kids both Art 1 and 3D classes made masks and sculptures out of paper mache'. In the past I wasn't that crazy about paper mache' because it can be super messy but it wasn't like that at all. Students did a great job coming up with ideas and diving in to make their work, without it becoming a crazy mess. These pictures don't do justice to the work the students put in.

10/6/2016 0 Comments Hello Harper creekI'm so excited about teaching at Harper Creek High School and have enjoyed the first 5 weeks here tremendously. I'm teaching Art I, 3D Art, and Visual Journaling. I'm not brand new to teaching art, having taught middle school art for BCPS for thirteen years and then teaching middle school art at St. Joseph last year. During my time at St. Joseph I was introduced to TAB (Teaching For Artistic Behavior). This method of teaching the art curriculum is a choice-based approach. If you would like to read more about TAB check out http://teachingforartisticbehavior.org/ for a run down of this approach. I'm using a modified method to help students transition into this way of working offering assignments based in media with an assignment given and one that the student may modify depending on their ideas. Students meet with me to explain their idea and what approach they are taking, I offer suggestions and may tweek their idea a little before they are given the OK to proceed. I have found that students respond to this method and get excited about being told "yes" when they tell you their idea. 3D Art |
First project for 3D art was paper sculpture. Students were given paper and asked to find as many ways as possible to create a 3D image with the paper. Students were each give a base and access to the colored paper. We took several opportunities to self-reflect on our work and get input from our peers. This project was really about getting used to the media and helping student prepare for the next project. |
Cardboard Sculpture
Students were asked to use the skills that they had used during the paper sculpture plus to think about how they could add texture by manipulating the cardboard. We also talked about support and composition.
Paper mache' and clay.
More mess more fun. 3D art is in the beginning of a clay project. We watched part of the Service Episode of Craft In America and discussed the reasons that people make art. Students brainstormed this idea before watching the episode and then again after the episode to see if any ideas changed, evolved or were added to their list. This is a powerful episode and you can watch them on line if you would like. I'll have some pictures soon.
